Summer of Reviews 3 of 3 Skin Tight Orbit Volume 1 Sexy Letters Volume 6 Issue 5 (2006) Penthouse Forums May 2008
Technically speaking summer is over once the kids go back to school… except next year the schools around here stop the year 'round schedule and go back to the old schedule (because it's what the teachers wanted). Well, don't get me started on my opinion of school politics, let's go into the reviews instead.
Skin Tight Orbit Volume 1 Written by Elaine Lee Artwork by Michael Kaluta, Mary Wilshire, Will Simpson & Phil Winslade Publisher : Amerotica (NBM Publishing) Published in 1995 Score : 3 Rapidly Decaying Orbits out of 5
Well here's one for the www.barebackmag.com record books everyone. It's my first review which I got from a mooch through www.bookmooch.com. Now don't get me wrong, I do a ton of business mooching back and forth with creators through that site, and it's a great place for swapping books and mangas let me tell you… it's just that, well, while I have secured quite a few prose erotica fictions for review when it comes to erotica comics and mangas the selection is… not there.
It's just that the stuff is high in demand. It's on a lot of people's wish lists, sure, but nobody is actually swapping the stuff. So on that rare occasion when you can find something of the sort to pick up? Well it's a special day indeed. And that brings us to the here and now, and this review of Skin Tight Orbit Volume 1.
A first… and most likely an only for sometime to come until that day when I somehow stumble onto another mooch in the future (near or far). So while we're here let's enjoy that as long as we can… deep breath… let the uniqueness of this moment just sink in… there… is it sinking in? Yes?…
Ok, nuff said. Let's review.
Skin Tight Orbit is the creation of one Elaine Lee, better known for her work on "Vamps" and "Starstruck". This small smathering of "erotic science fiction" are all written by her, but since she is apparently not a multi-talented creator (I.e. a writer slash artist) she has others do the drawing for her.
In "The Next Best Thing To Being There" (drawn by "The Shadow" and fellow "Starstruck" talent Michael Kaluta) a male and female separated by a droid war across vast space find a way to hook up and get physical… and yes, there's a twist ending to it. Feel sorry for her, everyone… maybe.
In "Promise Her Anything" (drawn by Mary Wilshire of Red Sonja and Barbie fame) we find a bunch of women building their own man… gee, wonder why.
"Double Your Pleasure" (drawn by fellow "Vamps" talent Will Simpson) is a story about a male and female who have to swap bodies in order to get things done on their little space station. Things happen, messed up things, and nothing good will come of this little "arrangement"… and this is considered, by the way, the best story of the batch? Hmm… no wonder this book got only an average score at best!
Finally "I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up" drawn by Phil Wins lade ("Goddess"). has a messed up love triangle between a husband, a wife and her mantoy… yeah, that should end nicely (not).
Overall if this was anymore average and not exciting I'd have given this a lower score. Despite the cover with a human male getting ready to bone a hot alien chick it's all human on human here (and yes while the first story is about a woman doing a robot the robot is controlled by a human mind). (And while I'm on the topic the women building the robot? He was a human robot.)
I guess Skin Tight Orbit Volume 2 might take it that next step and show human on alien loving (that ends hopefully in something better than horrible endings) but for this one it's just human on human… and not very good human on human either I might add. If there was something hot or intense or beautiful about all this sex I'd praise it more (or at least give it a 4 out of 5) but it's average in that dept. too (so it's getting an average for both human only sex and not that great sex too while I'm at it).
Of course since you can find it in a bargain bin by now it's at least lookable, as long as you don't drop full price for this one since it's not worth cover price. Get it used, swap it with someone (if only there was a site just for erotica comic swapping like www.bookmooch.com) get it however you can just don't pay cover price for the trip (it's good but not great).
Skin Tight Orbit manages to maintain a level 3 orbit out of 5, which is a good score for it considering what it's all about (and how it could have been better).
Battle of the Erotic Letter Writers
Sexy Letters Volume 6 Issue 5 By the letter writers to Second Winds Production Publisher : Second Winds Production Published in 2006 Score : 4 Interesting rival concepts out of 5
If you were to ask what you should be picking up off the erotic adults only newsstand aisle at your local Borders or the like? Well… Penthouse the Magazine itself would not be something I'd recommend. With very little interesting content (at least content you can't find on the internet) it's not worth the ever rising price they ask you for.
If you want a good read I'd go with Penthouse Forums (which is about to be reviewed), that at least is concentrated adult content in comparison to the so-so content of the original Penthouse magazine.
But is Penthouse Forums the Madden NFL of erotic reader contribution slash erotic fiction content? Apparently not since we have this title… Sexy Letters.
Now mind you when I first saw this I thought it was a title from the 80's, in fact according to www.bookmooch.com it's from the 80's… then I read the copyright info for the above and it's marked 2006 so… go figure.
A batch of letters covering lesbian love, incest sex amongst the family, masturbation, work related sex, backdoor, it's all here and abit more. Split into sections each one covers the bases on each topic and does it well enough. The gimmick of the title, however, is the accompanying artwork that comes with the title. Kinda nicely done drawn artwork that adds a little sexual spice to the read… though not sexual truth in advertising as the scenes in the pics don't really match the stories going on in the issue. I guess if the images were a true reflection of the tales then… well… maybe it'd score higher.
Other than that the rest of the content is a long chain of ads for erotic services (I guess unlike Penthouse this publication earns it's bread and butter from advertising revenues though Penthouse does have it's own advertising in Forums). Otherwise I do like the idea of this company standing on it's own as Penthouse Forums rival but they could use a few more bits and pieces to take it further.
May I recommend the artwork have more to do with the stories as some of the images look great, but without a story that synches with the art… well… disappointing. Otherwise keep banging away at Penthouse and don't give up… unless you went out of business between 2006 and now, hope not.
For their own future, I'm giving Sexy Letters a 4 out of 5. Hopefully they are still in business for the title (and publication) to have a future with.

If you want a good read I'd go with Penthouse Forums (…which, oddly enough, is what we're about to be talking about right now…). But is Penthouse Forums the Madden NFL of erotic reader contribution slash erotic fiction content? Apparently -- well actually yes since it's the high end of the deal with glossy paper and live pics up the wazoo.
Yes it has it's own advertising, like Sexy Letters, but since it's a major player it can have abit of it's own in-house advertising and not just ads to make ends meet. After that we have a whole plethora of content. News, Guilty Pleasures, little erotica add ons, and of course letters. Not in themes like Sexy Letters it's abit, and the accompanying live action pics that go with the stories actually go with the stories (and synch a bit better than the images used with Sexy Letters, which were nice but often didn't match the stories).
Letters, little sexy moments (lesbian, two girls and a guy, a preview from Variations with one on one straight, and other stuff like reviews and so forth). Hey, I'd like to do stuff like this… if I can find a publisher that wasn't allergic to adult erotica… I need that. Oh well.
Content wise it's end to end good stuff, and heck you can get it for only $5 a month? Not bad. Not bad at all. A little slice of erotica for a nice low price. Can't go wrong there. OK, nuff said, better than the overpriced Penthouse. This is a keeper. 5 cute sexy sequences with lesbians out of 5. Enjoy.
Next Time Summer is over and done with, we're now going into the Fall with September 2008's reviews! Let's see what we're reviewing… maybe I'll have to go back to shopping at Barnes & Noble and get more to review… if they would only stop stocking up on a gazillion and one Yaoi titles… sheesh! You can't even buy erotic content at Barnes & Noble without the excess of Yaoi shoved in your face! Dammit!
